Background of the study
Gender-based economic participation significantly influences the equitable distribution of economic opportunities within a community. In Ekiti West Local Government Area, Ekiti State, both men and women engage in economic activities, yet disparities persist in access to resources, credit, and market opportunities (Olawale, 2023). Traditionally, cultural norms have confined women to specific economic roles, often limiting them to small-scale trading and agriculture. However, recent initiatives aimed at promoting gender equality have begun to reshape these traditional roles, enabling women to participate in a broader range of economic activities. Despite these advancements, significant gaps in income, employment, and entrepreneurial opportunities remain between genders (Adetola, 2024). This study seeks to evaluate the current state of gender-based economic participation in Ekiti West, analyzing the factors that both hinder and promote equitable involvement. By examining educational opportunities, access to credit, and policy frameworks, the research aims to provide evidence-based recommendations to bridge the gender gap, foster inclusive growth, and promote sustainable community development.

Statement of the problem
Despite progress in promoting gender equality, significant disparities in economic participation persist in Ekiti West. Women continue to encounter barriers such as limited access to credit, insufficient training opportunities, and restrictive cultural norms that constrain their involvement in high-value economic activities (Olawale, 2023). These obstacles not only limit individual economic empowerment but also hinder the overall economic growth of the region (Adetola, 2024). The existing policies and initiatives appear insufficient to address these deep-seated imbalances, resulting in unequal income distribution and suboptimal economic performance. This study aims to identify the key factors contributing to gender disparities in economic participation and evaluate current interventions, with the goal of proposing strategies to foster a more inclusive and balanced economic environment.

Objectives of the study (3):

  1. To assess the level of gender-based economic participation in Ekiti West.

  2. To identify barriers and enablers to equitable economic engagement.

  3. To recommend policy interventions to enhance gender equality in economic activities.

Research questions (3):

  1. What is the extent of gender-based economic participation in Ekiti West?

  2. What factors hinder or facilitate economic engagement for women?

  3. How can policy interventions improve gender equality in economic participation?

Research Hypotheses (3):

  1. There is a significant disparity in economic participation between genders.

  2. Socio-cultural barriers negatively impact women's economic involvement.

  3. Targeted policy interventions will enhance gender-based economic inclusion.

Significance of the study
This study provides essential insights into gender-based economic participation in Ekiti West, highlighting disparities and identifying opportunities for improvement. Its findings will inform policymakers and community leaders on strategies to promote gender equality and enhance economic growth. By addressing specific barriers faced by women, the research aims to foster a more inclusive economic environment that benefits the entire community (Olawale, 2023; Adetola, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to evaluating gender-based economic participation in Ekiti West Local Government Area, focusing on disparities in access to economic opportunities and resources.

Definitions of terms (3):

  1. Gender-Based Economic Participation: The involvement of individuals in economic activities influenced by gender.

  2. Economic Inclusion: Ensuring equal access to economic resources and opportunities.

  3. Gender Equality: Equal opportunities and rights irrespective of gender.
